How long does a panel upgrade take?

Most residential service upgrades are a single day. The power is off for part of that day while the utility disconnects and reconnects, and we schedule that window in advance so you can plan around it.

Do I need a permit to replace my electrical panel?

Yes. A service or panel replacement is permitted and inspected work everywhere in our service area. We pull the permit, meet the inspector and hand you the paperwork, which matters the day you sell the house or renew your insurance.

My house still has a fuse box. Is that actually a problem?

It can be two problems. Insurers increasingly refuse to write or renew policies on fuse boxes, and buyers routinely walk at inspection. Beyond that, a 60-amp fuse service simply cannot carry a modern house. Converting to a breaker panel resolves all of it.

Hardwired units make more sense when you're running a higher-draw charger, when the manufacturer requires it for warranty purposes, or when a flush wall-mount matters to you aesthetically. Either way, the circuit sizing is identical — what changes is the termination point. Does my Pittsburgh-area home need a panel upgrade before an EV charger can be installed?
Not always, but it's the first thing we check. A 200-amp panel with available breaker slots can usually absorb a 40–50 amp EV circuit without changes. A 100-amp service common in older Mon Valley homes often can't — the math on existing loads leaves no margin. We do the load calculation before we quote, so you know which situation you're in before committing to anything.
How long does EV charger installation take, and will I be without power?
Most installations are done in a half-day to a full day. If the panel has capacity and the run is straightforward — say, a garage on the same wall as the panel — it's typically two to four hours. If we're trenching to a detached garage or bundling in a panel upgrade, it takes longer. Any power interruption is limited to the circuit work itself; the whole house going dark is only a factor if a panel upgrade is part of the job.
